Schutzhund (German for “protection dog”), competitively now known as IGP, is a dog sport that tests a dog’s skills. These dogs are evaluated by a licensed judge in the sport and ensures the dog has the right traits and characteristics of a solid working dog. Developed in Germany in the early 1900s by German Cavalry Captain, Max von Stephanitz as a suitability test, Schutzhund is broken down into three phases, tracking, obedience and protection. There are many titles to be earned in the sport. The first is called a Begleithundeprüfung / BH, (German for “Traffic Sure Companion Dog Test”). After the dog completes the first title, they then can now pursue the many other titles that are offered in the sport, for example: IGP1, AD. There are also international and national level competitions. Most German breeds now compete in Shutzhund. Participates in this sport bond with their dog while providing a lifetime of achievements and learning.
